The Barnes Cemetery |
The Barnes Cemetery has been called the saddest place in the park. Perhaps because it is the lonely final resting place to three children. Perhaps for the fact that Christmas Day was the death date of Delia and the birth date of "Julies" a few years later. Maybe it is the saddest, maybe no more than any number of other cemeteries. One thing's for sure, it is a solemn place. And yet, beautiful.
Delia Lenora Barnes |
Julies Barnes (possibly misspelled?) |
Some believe that the stone for "Julies" is actually a misspelling of the name Julius and that this is the grave of a boy instead of a girl. Since Julies seems like such an odd name, I kinda lean towards this theory.
Rosey Barnes |
It is believed that Rosey, who at the age of 7, became lost outside and succumbed to the elements. Perhaps hypothermia or an early winter storm.
The cemetery is located off-trail in Greenbrier near the remains of the Barnes' home.
