Abraham Law Grave Site

Where is it?

A hike to The White Oak Sinks starts on the Schoolhouse Gap trail and leads just over a mile to the Turkeypen Ridge Trail. On Schoolhouse, just beyond the junction with Turkeypen, there's an unofficial trail to the right. Although unmarked, its a well known and used trail leading down to the sinks and to the grave of Abraham Law.

Interesting facts.

Abraham Law (1790-1864) was married to Delilah McCrosky (1786-1860) and had nine or possibly ten children. Legend has it that Mr. Law had intended to be buried in Meyers Cemetery in Townsend but due to a heavy snow at the time of his death, it was impossible to get him from his home in the sinks to the cemetery. So it is here he remains. There's an original crude stone and a newer stone with the dates. Its believed, however, that these dates are incorrect and that 1775-1844 are the actual correct ones.

Currently, the Park Service has closed the entire White Oak Sinks area due to the white nose disease affecting the bats in the area.
