Jonas Phillips Cemetery

The sign at the road is actually a tombstone itself. It was barely visible when I was there.

The Jonas Phillips Cemetery

The painted stone of Margarette Phillips

Interesting coloring on the stone of Micheal Phillips.

I love the way this stone looks curved.

Jonas Phillips Cemetery is rather large with nearly 100 interments

WWII Vet, Zack Phillips

It almost looks like the person who inscribed this stone was unsure how to spell Billy and left enough room for another L.

The cemetery is located off Hwy. 32 in Cocke County near Pine Hill Way about 3/4 of a mile from the Tennessee/North Carolina state line.

Up to this point in my cemetery travels, this was the first time I felt uneasy. When I was in the far back of the cemetery, I had a strange feeling come over me. No reason, just odd.

The name and the fact he died on Christmas Day gave me ironic pause.

"Born and died between 1840-1900"

The cemetery is located near the Palmer Chapel Methodist Church on the opposite side of Cataloochee Entrance Road in Cataloochee, NC. There is a sign pointing the way.

There are many Caldwells buried here, in fact Levi Caldwell would seem to be buried twice. The surname Caldwell was often spelled Colwell years ago and eventually became Caldwell. Here we find Levi Belese Caldwell and Levi Belese Colwell with the exact same dates.

There's also a lot of Confederate graves here which have been adorned with Confederate Flags. One of which was Warren Lockman who served as a Private Company H in the 25th North Carolina Infantry. Oddly, there was another Warren Lockman also from North Carolina that fought on the Union side. He was a Private Company E in the 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry.

Palmer Cemetery

Also known as The Robert Palmer Cemeterty and The Palmer Family Cemetery, The Palmer Cemetery is located about a mile and a half from the trailhead of the Boogerman Trail on a small unmarked side trail to the right. The access trail is a little steep but only about 50 yards up. There are no headstones.

This is believed to be the final resting place of Robert "Boogerman" Palmer. One of the more intriguing characters of Park lore.

Here's an interesting blog about the man, the legend and the trail:
Yes, Virginia, there really is a boogerman.

The Old Elkmont Cemetery is located on Elkmont #2 Cemetery Access Road in the popular 'hidden' town of Elkmont.

Also known as Elkmont #2 and Wonderland Cemetery. This is a well maintained beauty resting in a very popular part of the Park. With the added allure of the ghost town that was the thriving community of Elkmont, there's a more personal aspect to this place. There also seems to be a high number of infants and children here and that is always difficult to comprehend.
